Peugeot is riding high!

Sales figures and order books are at their highest. However, the ambitions of the firm to the lion do not seem to decrease. As proof, its compact sedan will pass the second in September – at the height of the German automobile during the Frankfurt Motor Show – with the commercialization of the 308 II phase 2.

To try the first models out of Sochaux factories, Peugeot invited us to test it in the heart of Germany. More precisely in the beautiful green region of Bavaria. Yes … to present its compact to the press worldwide, Peugeot attacks Volkswagen on his land.

Never change a winning team…

French stylists had the difficult task. How to improve and energize a car that pleases, without losing the soul of it? Their answer is rather convincing. They simply touched the front. On board, nothing evolves. At least in appearance, since the multimedia system is remade with a new capacitive touch screen of 9.2 inches, which is in use much more responsive. It allows to use the 3D navigation connected to TomTom Traffic. As its name suggests, this optimizes travel time by avoiding, as far as possible, slowdowns and traffic jams. In addition, via its network connection, it gives the weather in real time, the location of petrol stations and parking spaces available. Thanks to the TomTom community, areas at risk or danger zones can be displayed by subscribing to the paid option. The Mirror Screen is also in the game. It allows to duplicate the screen of his smartphone on the touch screen of his vehicle. What to listen to his music, call or use the GPS system.

The new Peugeot 308 now offers an unprecedented powertrain offer in its segment. The new eight-speed automatic gearbox coupled with the BlueHDi 180 S & S diesel engine or the unique Diesel 1.5 BlueHDi 130 S & S engine. With its new efficient engines, PEUGEOT anticipates the introduction of the Euro 6.c standard with new pollution control systems in both gasoline and diesel.

And that’s good. The first 308 1.5 BlueHDi 130 S & S GT Line exit assembly line was there. It will therefore be a delicacy for this first test of the new range 308 phase 2. But before going out at full speed with my beautiful machine all white, make a point on this brand new engine.

Admittedly, he wins 10 horses compared to the replaced 1.6 BlueHDi 120 S & S, but he does not pulverize his time. Just should be satisfied with a gain of 0.2 seconds at 0 to 100 km / h. However, it offers a consumption gain of the order of 4 to 6% depending on the standard consumptions. Mechanical engineers will explain that in addition to a reduction in displacement, this new diesel takes advantage of a new exchanger and a new combustion system from the piston geometry of the Peugeot 908 victorious at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In addition, it inaugurates a new NOx decontamination system and a new FAP. In short … our dear Mayor of Paris will have no more excuses with its anti-diesel policy, since it is – if not – one of the most cleansed engines.

The moment of truth !

After this little tour in the meanders of engineers, here I am finally with the key in hand. Obviously, the cockpit of the 308 keeps its i-Cockpit. It combines: the small steering wheel, the high instrumentation and the touch screen perfectly positioned not to leave the road of the eyes. Some of my colleagues are still struggling to adapt, yet with a seat in the up position and the backrest straight, the driving position is just perfect.

I disengage and press the START button. The mill begins to slam; a characteristic sound of 4 fuel legs oil. Three kilometers later, the roaring of it will fade to the point of being forgotten. While the kilometers follow each other, the on-board computer remains stoic with an average consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 km. Pretty impressive!

The mountain roads and therefore the long virolos, the pins, the climbs in the towers are profiled. Here, no more question of rolling green. I activate the SPORT mode. The instrumentation turns red and the controls are more virile. The road is free. I take this opportunity to put full throttle. The bastards are waiting to pass above 1,500 rpm to react and beautifully.

I just stay under the red zone to optimize the performances, because at the beginning, it is not really done to realize times on a stage of the WRC. If the fuel gauge (or rather Diesel) panics, chassis perfectly rigid chained zigzags without any problem. The depreciation unveils once again the know-how of the firm. Flexible in support, to stay comfortable, the suspensions get firmer as soon as the driving voltage demands it. In short … despite its small diesel mill, the pleasure of driving is there.

After 22 km in the red zone, it was time to calm the ardor of the lioness. The Autobahn is fortunately in sight. Peugeot has had the good idea to install a string of systems of driving aids that will facilitate my return to square one. I will pass on the alert attention driver, the automatic switching of the high beam or the recognition of speed panels that does not really revolutionize the way of driving daily. No, what is to be welcomed is the arrival of the self-adaptive cruise control coupled with the system of maintenance in the queue. Certainly, we are far from the semi-autonomous cars that can be seen in our German neighbors, but the whole remains efficient and easy to use.

 

She stays above the rank!

That’s what to restart the fight. If the Golf remains the benchmark of the segment in the semi-autonomous car, the 308 opposes arguments of its own. Starting with a more typical atmosphere, a more modern style and especially an outstanding road behavior. Assuredly, Peugeot has reconcocted a car for lovers of driving …

The only problem is that at the time I write this test, Peugeot has not communicated the price of this new 308 1.5 BlueHDi 130 GT Line . Let’s hope that the current trend of heavy addition does not happen again.
